The process is entirely as nature intended; the mama sea turtle instinctively searches for a peaceful, secluded beach to nest, almost untouched by human hands. After creating the perfect nest, by digging a small hollow with her hind legs, the eggs are deposited and she will return to the sea, leaving them to develop on their own.

Having realized the potential harm from the outside environment that the turtles face, Six Sense Con Dao restored its beach to optimize egg laying for the green turtles and help decrease the mortality rate of turtle hatchlings.

Since the temperature of the sand in which the eggs are nesting plays a key role in deciding the gender of a turtle egg, influencing the hatchling performance the resort’s incubation is believed to provide the best nesting condition allowing temperatures to be controlled and adjusted, using completely natural techniques with a skilled team of care-takers trained in conservation. As the newly appointed General Manager of Six Senses Con Dao, Eric Hallin brings with him over 40 years of international experience in luxurious hospitality management to the tropical paradise. 

Growing up in Africa and Europe, he attended the Universities of Malawi and Stockholm before joining the travel industry. Fluent in several languages, his career has spanned several countries, including France, Greece, Maldives, Spain and Thailand. His management expertise has contributed to the success of many properties, including the Six Senses Hideaway in Koh Samui, voted “Best Hotel in the World” by Condé Nast Traveller readers in 2008. 

Taking his steps into the pristine island of Con Dao, Eric brings a fresh breeze to the resort and its hosts and shares his working philosophy that a general manager is only as good as his ability to instruct, motivate and empower his team. Eric also attaches importance to community issues and local business development. To do this he has held many leading positions in PATA, chambers of commerce and Skål.   

British born; based in South East Asia since 2016 Hannah Loughlin, has cultivated her knowledge, leadership and management skills in sales and marketing since 2002 in Grosvenor House, London before going on to join brands such as Design hotels, and spearheading the field team of prestigious iconic Hotels such as Sofitel London St James, InterContinental and Anantara, Angkor. 

Prior to her new role at Six Senses Con Dao, Hannah was leading the sales, operations and finance team in Cambodia as General Manager for Trails of Indochina, a luxury inbound agency across Indochina. With her goal-oriented and strategic mindset, and a great deal of passion for luxury travel, Hannah makes a perfect fit for Six Senses Con Dao.

The Vietnamese Government is very active in handling the situation and thankfully there have been no serious cases of Covid-19 in our transit point of Ho Chi Minh City, and the 16 confirmed cases in the nation have all been confirmed as cured as at the end of February.

We are the Con Dao islands and Six Senses Con Dao are safe and un-touched by the issue, and at present no guest or host has experienced any flu-like symptoms.  The island is still as safe and attractive as ever, and we are continuing to greet local and foreign visitors daily.

Our team have taken extensive steps to ensure all safety and health precautions are in place to ensure our guests feel safe while enjoying their stay at Six Senses Con Dao.  We have put in place a thorough procedure to ensure the safety and cleanliness from front office to back of house and throughout the resort in line with our commitment to the deepest possible care for our guests.

Common spaces such as the bar and restaurant are regularly cleaned with disinfectant wipes. Rooms and their amenities are being ‘deep cleaned’ in a process that includes the removal of bed sheets, pillow and blanket covers upon request as well as after check-out. Water bottles are disinfected and refilled directly from our own water -distilling facility, ensuring the highest safety and hygiene standards. Our restaurant’s always-fresh ingredients are sourced from the resort’s own organic garden and from local markets.

After graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in economics, Dominic decided to pursue his passion and turned it into his lifetime career. Having opened his first hotel at the age of 24 as director of nightlife for W Hotels, Dominic has since been a part of five hotel openings. He simultaneously took up the role of director of food and beverage, and headed up luxury properties in four countries around the globe including USA, Mexico, Turks & Caicos, Maldives and now Vietnam (a recent addition to his impressive list); with respected brands such as COMO, St Regis and W Hotels. Dominic prides himself on being a part of the team in two hotels winning the Forbes Travel Guide 5 Stars Award – St Regis Bal Habour, Florida, US and St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, Maldives; and the wonderful opportunity he had to handle some of the most outstanding events in his career like the NBA All Stars, Miami Music Conference, BPM Festival Mexico and ESPY Awards as well as the Oscars. Dominic’s intriguing background saw him born and raised in Missouri, USA by his parents Patrick and Victoria. He was inspired by summers spent in the love of his grandparents who had been teaching him about hospitality from a very early age; from filling the fridge with his favorite preferences, customized activities planned everyday with “back up” weather options and ensuring every meal was made from scratch. They also taught him patience through hours of trout fishing, the value of being firm but fair, and the importance of being organized and always taking the time to put things back in their place. Dominic’s personal priorities are exercising the body & mind through meditation, family, travel, the arts and professional growth – all of which he believes, align him naturally with the hospitality industry and with Six Senses.

“I believe in a mindful approach to hospitality. I feel that the best way to learn and grow through travel is to first ‘seek to understand and then to be understood’. A Home for Green Sea Turtles

In collaboration with National Parks, Six Senses Con Dao has become the proud custodians of selected clutches of turtle eggs, relocated by the National Park team to protect the eggs from being poached from nests at neighboring islands. Our incubation center, “Let’s Get Cracking” has since been home to many new hatchlings, where our guests participate in our conservation efforts, by joining our early morning hatchling releases. By the end of 2018, the resort had received 56 clutches with a total 2,904 turtle hatchlings, out of 3,500 eggs handed over by the National Parks team successfully hatched at the resort.

In line with the resort’s effort to reduce the use of processed food, a mushroom hut is built nearby. Being classified as “endangered” in the Vietnam Red Data Book and “critically endangered” in the IUCN Red list of Threatened Animals, these species are normally discovered in coastal regions and islands from Quang Nam to Ninh Thuan; Con Dao and Gulf of Thailand. Currently, Con Dao’s surrounding waters has the largest population of green turtles (Chelonia Mydas) and is also where they come to lay eggs most frequently. This could be explained by the well-preserved ecological system which has been reestablished in the proximity of the resort, which has fallen in favor of the turtles and appearing to be a favorable spot for them to nest. 

In collaboration with National Parks, Six Senses Con Dao has become the proud custodians of selected clutches of turtle eggs, relocated by the National Parks team to protect the eggs from being poached from nests at neighboring islands. The resort’s incubation center, “Let’s Get Cracking” has since been home to many new hatchlings, where guests participate in the conservation efforts, by joining early morning releases, right on the resort’s very own beach. This 50 m2 incubation enclosure is able to accommodate up to 40 turtle clutches at the same time. To provide the best hatching condition, after being handed over by the National Parks team, each clutch is placed in a pre-burrowed nest which is 60 cm below the sand surface.  Each nest is then safeguarded by a wooden frame and personalized with a sign indicating date and number of eggs per clutch, so the team can keep track of each nest. Normally, it will take around 40 to 70 days for the eggs to hatch with the success rate varying from 50 percent to 80 percent. At Six Senses Con Dao, this process lasts from 55 to 60 days with the success rate of 83 percent. The process of hatching eggs takes place at a temperature of 28oC to 32oC. The higher the temperature, the quicker they hatch. 

In general, the egg-laying season here is from May to October, but the year 2018 witnessed sea turtles visiting the Six Sense Con Dao beach from January to March to find the perfect spot to lay their eggs. This has been an auspicious sign for both the turtles and the resort. By the end of 2018, the resort had received 56 clutches with a total 2,904 turtle hatchlings, out of 3,500 eggs handed over by the National Parks team successfully hatched at the resort. More than 70 percent of in-house guests participate every time a turtle hatchling release occurs. Most are amazed by what the resort has been doing to protect the endangered species and simultaneously offering such an activity allowing them to involve their children, so they can witness a special moment in nature and learn more about how they can also contribute to the legacy of marine conservation. Recently, on March 18, 2019, the resort just welcomed a mama turtle coming to its private shore to lay eggs. 90 eggs were carefully collected and are now being hatched in the resort’s incubation “Let’s Get Cracking”. Isn’t is a good new to start the hatchling season this year? It is expected that the resort will welcome more than 60 turtle clutches in the year 2019. This also indicates that there will be more chances for in-house guests to be able to take part in this Out-Of-The-Ordinary experience.
